What is happening in the first session?

Starting psychotherapy can feel like a big step, and it is completely normal to feel uncertain or anxious about what to expect.

The first session is not about pressure or deep analysis. Instead, it is an opportunity to get to know the therapist and begin building a trusting relationship.

During the session, you may be asked to talk about what brought you to therapy, the difficulties you are facing, and your goals. There is no “right” way to do this — you can share whatever you feel comfortable with.

The therapist may also ask gentle questions to better understand your history and needs, so they can support you more effectively.

Equally important, the first session gives you the opportunity to see if you feel comfortable with the therapist. A sense of safety and understanding is a fundamental part of therapy.

You don’t need to have all the answers from the start. Therapy is a gradual process — and the first step is simply to begin.

And that alone is already an important step towards change.
